Fred Astaire: The Conference
ORIEL COLLEGE OXFORD
21–24 JUNE 2008

Philip Davey

Philip Davey is a staff writer with Chisholm Institute of Technical and Further Education in Melbourne, Australia.

Having developed a passion later in life for writing and then researching 20th Century Australian history, Philip studied at Melbourne’s Deakin University and graduated with a BA in History in 2002.

During this time, Philip researched the making of Stanley Kramer’s famous Melbourne produced film “On the Beach”, examining both the Hollywood connection and the extraordinary way the ‘locals’ reacted and participated in the making of this significant film.

In 2005, Philip published “When Hollywood Came to Melbourne: The Story of the Making of Stanley Kramer’s On the Beach.” Recognized academically for his research, Philip was invited to apply for PhD candidature with Murdoch University in Perth, Western Australia, which he commenced in 2007 in the field of Australian television drama production.

Having gained a rare insight into Fred Astaire’s unique and outstanding performance in On the Beach, Philip will be discussing Fred’s participation in terms of the prevailing Cold War culture, author Nevil Shute’s characterization, why Stanley Kramer cross-cast Fred for the role, how Fred approached a number of extremely difficult and emotional scenes, and the way in which he won the hearts of the Australian people.
