Michael Morley

Educated at the Universities of Auckland, Zurich and Oxford (Christ Church), Michael Morley lectured in German Language and Literature before moving to Flinders University, Adelaide, where he has been Professor of Drama since 1984. He has published on Brecht’s poetry and drama and on his collaborations with composers Kurt Weill and Hanns Eisler, as well as on twentieth-century European and Australian theatre and music theatre, and has contributed translations to the Methuen edition of Brecht’s poetry. He has also written film, theatre and music reviews for a variety of Australian and international publications, has been President and Vice-President of the International Brecht Society, and is on the editorial advisory board of the Complete Edition of the Works of Kurt Weill.

As a professional musician he has worked on a range of productions, including “The Threepenny Opera” and “Happy Birthday Brecht” (Artaud Theatre, San Francisco). Morley was dramaturge and musical advisor for the double bill “The Decision” (Eisler/Brecht) and “The Second Hurricane” (Copland) for the 2000 Adelaide Festival, and was Musical Associate for the Sondheim/Weidman Assassins (2007, Adelaide Festival Centre). He has also worked on numerous cabaret shows, most recently “Sing Your Own Musicals” (Melbourne International Festival, 2004, and Adelaide Cabaret Festival 2006 and 2007) and has presented German and European cabaret recitals with the singer Robyn Archer throughout Australia as well as in Hong Kong, Bourges, Ljubljana and Oxford.
